The Project
This project consists of two parts. The first is to raise awareness about the current situation in Darfur and the help that's needed there. The second is the cycling trip itself.
Raising awareness
Since peace has returned to Darfur, the area has slipped off the radar of the international community once again. However, the aftermath of the conflict is still prevalent. Villages have been destroyed, thousands of people are still living in refugee camps, and there is a severe lack of basic facilities. We hope, through a variety of activities, to bring attention to the situation in Darfur and to help (re)build educational facilities. In the months preceding the cycling trip we hope to reach as many people as possible through the following channels:
• Awareness and fundraising activities in primary and highschools
• Awareness and fundraising activities in churches and other religious institutions
• Apply for support from companies and organizations
• Media coverage
We would like to invite everyone to participate in making this project a success, to help in making it known to the public, and, consequently, to increase the chances of making a substantial financial contribution to the (re)building of the educational facilities in Darfur. We welcome any idea or project that will influence the project in a positive way. Our success depends on your generosity and willingness to help.
The Trip
The second part of our project is the physical and mental challenge of cycling 18,000 kilometers from The Hague, the Netherlands, to Khartoum, Sudan. Through our efforts we hope to enable (local) people and organizations cooperating with ZOA to create more and better facilities for the Darfuri people.
Our trip will be done solely by bicycle, and we hope not to use any other form of transportation. In rural areas, we will be spending the nights in tents and we will need to rely on local food for our survival. Besides the obvious unforgettable things that will happen, we will share our experiences of the trip through the blog on this website. We hope that our experiences will give a better insight of the everyday life in the various countries, cultures and religions we pass through.
We bear the total costs for the trip by ourselves so that all the money that we generate will be made available to build the schools in Darfur.
Below an overview of the countries we will pass through:
