ZOA - relief hope recovery

We have established a collaboration with an official Dutch organization: ZOA- relief hope recovery, which is active in development aid and that is willing to host our project and handle the financial administration. ZOA is an official organization which has an ANBI-status (tax relief) and a CBF-hallmark.

ZOA's educational activities are focused on the improvement of access to education and its quality in North- and South Darfur. ZOA works primarily in the areas that have been affected by the conflict and focuses mainly on returning refugees in the area. These people are usually less supported by the international community and the NGO's than the people residing in refugee camps.

The majority of the villages supported are partially or completely destroyed by the violence, leaving little to no facilities for education. Children are simply unable to attend school. Those who do attend usually have to walk for hours to get there, and, consequently, younger children and girls are mostly affected by the lack of facilities in the region.

Specific activities are creating safe academic environments, including the supply of school furniture and teach- and learning materials. Besides that, support is given to educate teachers, clean water, sanitation- and hygiene projects and the development of Teacher Parent Associations (PTAs). Through these combined activities, ZOA hopes to reach 15725 people in 2011 alone; 13500 students and 225 teachers in primary education, and another 2000 in adult education.

The possession of the school building and all materials are transferred to the PTAs. They will be responsible for any future maintenance. The content of the curricula and the influence of the teachers on them is the responsibility of the local government. ZOA supports the regional Ministry of Education with materials and training. UNICEF is the biggest contributor to educational projects in Darfur for the central government.
